Math Book Club
Over the summer of 2010, I read two books by Danica McKeller and I thought that they were great. I spoke to our librarian about these and he said he heard about them. He ran with the idea and made this one of the books for the new book club pilot program.
For this particular program, we identified students who scored well on NJASK Language Arts reading , but relatively low in the NJASK math. Students had to be nominated by their math teachers and then go through a more detailed screening process. Because the book is primarily written for girls, we limited membership accordingly.
The club starts in February and they already had a preliminary meeting. Seven of my students are enrolled. I will be helping out in two sessions a week (when I can be pulled from another responsibility).
Hopefully this works out well, and the pilot program can be expanded next year.
