ASK MURRAY

Dear Murray,
What are you thinking of doing for New Years? Have you ever been to New York City to see the big giant ball drop down from the sky?

From
an admirer

Dear Admirer:
I've never given much thought to New Years. I'm usually in a silent classroom as December turns to January. My new year always begins on my birthday -- the last day of school -- when I look forward to a restful, quiet summer. But your letter intrigues me: to be The Ball that bounces in the new year in Times Square.... A three hundred fifty pound ball falling into Times Square at midnight... Thank you, Admirer, for that image!

Dear Murray,
After doing a bit of investigating, I've come to realize that I may be the only student in VTHS who hasn't seen you in person. Is there a time when I can come visit you?

Signed,
Curious

Dear Curious:
You are welcome to visit any time except periods 3, 5, & 7. I look forward to meeting you
!

Murray:
I find it odd that when I send you an email---it goes directly to Mr. Lightcap. Nevertheless, I remember some years ago you were kidnapped by some hooligan students and left for ransom.  If I remember correctly, students stored you in the woods in the back of the school.  Can you please recount this terrifying experience, as it might give hope to other kidnapped foil balls who are being held captive right this minute.    Also, do you feel that Mr. Lightcap and room 106 can safely protect you?
Sincerely, ?KCA

Dear KCA:
Until I am able to get an address of my own, all my mail goes to Mr. L’s school mailbox for me to answer. As for your other question, I have been kidnapped twice from my classroom. Both incidents
were traumatizing and horrific. I will not detail either ordeal, as I believe such recountings serve only to encourage others to engage in terroristic and bullying behavior. Both incidents were resolved with cool heads, calm demeanors, and patient detective work. As for feeling safe in room 106... security is illusion. I accept what each new moment brings, and try not to think about what each new moment could bring.

Dear Murray ....
I have noticed that winter is arriving very quickly and the birds that I feed daily are not coming around.  If I plant bird seed, will I get new birds?

Lottsa luv ...
the bird lady

Dear Bird Lady:
Jacques Deval, the French writer and director, wrote “God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages.” Though no birds grow from seeds, planting a tree will help keep you sky-high in birds for a long time.
