3. Government
a) The Federal Government employs over 250,000 people who work in Washington, D.C.
b) State governments are like federal governments in many ways.
(1) Power to rule is divided between three branches – executive, legislative, and judicial.
(2) The people elect their leaders.
(a) The leader of the executive branch of state government is the governor.
(b) The leader of the executive branch of the federal government is the president.
(3) Both make and enforce laws.
(4) Collect taxes
(5) Provide services for people
4. Industries
a) Food-processing industries are located near the farms because they use the crops and livestock grown and raised on farms.
b) High-tech industries invent, build, or use computers and other electronic equipment.
(1) North Carolina has the nation’s largest high-tech center.
(2) This Research Triangle Park is formed by three cities –Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

(2) The Ozark Mountains give it the same type of land geography as the others.

b) Visitors enjoy bluegrass music, folk music, and country music.
(1) Nashville, Tennessee is called the Capital of Country Music.
4. Coal Mining
a) Mines in Kentucky and West Virginia provide about one-fourth of the nation’s coal.
b) Two kinds of coal mining are shaft mining and strip mining.
(1) In strip mining, coal is near the Earth’s surface and is removed by bulldozers which destroy the land.
(2) The government passed laws that require mining companies to reclaim the land by putting back soil, trees, and plants.
5. National Parks are one way the government protects land, water, culture, and history of our country.
a) Great Smoky Mountains National Park
(1) Located on the border between Tennessee and North Carolina.
(2) It gets more visitors than any other national park in the US.
b) Mammoth Cave National Park
(1) Located in Kentucky
(2) It protects the longest cave system in the US.
c) Hot Springs National Park
(1) Located in Arkansas
(2) 47 natural hot springs
d) Crater of Diamonds State Park
(1) Located in Arkansas
(2) The only working diamond mine in the US.
